There are two types of batteries on the market: a cheap and poor quality one, and a more expensive branded one with much better quality parameters. Choosing a cheaper product may be a good option for those who want to replace the battery every season, but not for those who want to enjoy trouble-free use for several years. It is then worth choosing a branded battery from reputable companies such as Bpower or Yuasa.
Unfortunately, just buying a battery is not enough. It also needs to be properly cared for after the season to extend its life. Batteries are chemical power sources that are subjected to a number of chemical processes, including sulfation. Sulfation is the crystallization of sulfur on the battery plates, which after a certain period of time causes irreversible damage to the battery or a serious loss of performance that prevents further proper operation.
How to take care of a lawnmower battery after the season?
First of all, do not leave it plugged in. A battery left in such a state within two months can discharge to a level that makes it impossible to start, and in minus temperatures it can even freeze. If we don’t have time to charge the battery, let’s at least disconnect it from the system – this will increase the chances of our battery’s survival by 30%.
If you have a charger, once every two months it is worth doing the so-called maintenance charging, that is, we charge with a current equal to 1/10 of the battery capacity for 10 hours. For example, for a 30Ah battery, we charge with a current of 3A for 10 hours. If we have the ability to plug in a conservation charger that will check the voltage drop across the terminals by itself and automatically recharge our battery, we can use it. Examples of such chargers are Bpower products:
