Why is the car battery discharging – checking the battery with a meter?
A battery stores electrical energy in the form of chemical energy. During charging, current is supplied to the battery, where it undergoes a reversible chemical transformation. During the conversion of chemical energy back into electrical energy, the battery is discharged. This occurs most often in winter, when energy expenditure is higher, due to, for example, heating mirrors, seats, etc. And it is at this time that the battery charge level should be checked more often, although at other times of the year it is also advisable to perform such battery checks. .
How to check the battery with a meter?
- The first step is to check the voltage at rest, the device will indicate whether the battery is properly charged. What does this mean? The dial of the meter should show a voltage of about 12.6 – 12.8V. If the indication is lower, the battery will be partially discharged.
- The next step is to turn off the engine (voltage drop on the dial). If the voltage indication is within 10V, everything with the battery is fine. Otherwise, its charge is insufficient.
- The third step worth taking is to check the density of the electrolyte. If it is possible to make such a measurement in your battery, you need to use an aerometer for this. It is available in the automotive store. Too low – you need to add water and after half an hour check the density of the electrolyte. If the device indicates within 1.28 g/cm3, it is correct, below it means you need to charge the battery.
How to check the voltage regulator?
You also need to inspect the charging system, when even frequent connection of the battery to the charger, does not bring the expected results. How to check the voltage regulator? This is one of the most important components of the battery charging system, if it is faulty the car will not start. To find out if it is working properly, use a universal meter, which is perfect for this purpose. How to check the battery and voltage regulator with a meter? Connect the meter and then start the engine in the car, then turn on the electrical devices one by one and check what values appear on the dial of the meter. If the readings are within 13.9 – 14.4V (in new cars the upper limit to 14.9V), you will know that the voltage regulator, alternator are working properly. Having on the equipment of your car such devices as a charger with electronic control or automatic charger, starter cables, battery meter or tester, aerometer at any time you can carry out checks on the charge of the battery and voltage regulator and also emergency start of the car.
