If your car’s engine doesn’t start, probably the first thing you think of is a discharged battery. Indeed, when temperatures drop a frosty morning can bring the driver such an unpleasant surprise. How to start the engine when the battery has too little voltage? A jump starter – a useful, compact device that you can always carry with you – can help. We took a look at how such equipment works, and whether it can really start the big BMW X5 engine.
What model of jump starter to choose?
For our test we chose the BPower GBC700 PRO model, which, according to the manufacturer’s claims, has a battery capacity of as much as 10,000 mAh. Such parameters, combined with the ability to generate high starting current, are a great recommendation. The BPower GBC700 PRO can, according to the manufacturer’s website, start even a 7-liter diesel or an 8-liter gasoline engine. It works well with most automotive batteries, including gel and maintenance-free batteries. Using this jump starter you can start naturally aspirated, turbocharged engines and hybrids, as well as cars with Start&Stop kit. On the market you can find many other jump starters that will do a good job of starting the engine, such as NOCO GB40.
The interesting thing about the BPower GBC700 PRO is its multifunctionality. You can easily use it as a powerbank and use it to power smaller devices. A discharged smartphone, phone or tablet – no problem! Connecting a travel refrigerator or navigation – how about that! Jump starter has multiple sockets: USB-C, USB-A and DC12, so it will work in any situation. What sets it apart is its built-in 10W inductive charger. You will wirelessly charge your phone with it. And a flashlight will help in emergency situations, if a power failure happens to you at night. But how does the BPower GBC700 PRO perform as a regular jump starter?
BPower GBC700 PRO vs. 20-year-old BMW X5
We conducted the jump starter test at a friendly car dealership. Luke, its owner, showed a long-unfired, 20-year-old BMW X5 with a 3-liter naturally aspirated engine. Firing up a car of such dimensions requires a lot of electricity. How did the jump starter perform? It turns out that as many as three electrical impulses were needed, but the engine surprised and managed to start! Although the car’s battery was heavily discharged (7V) and the temperature was 8oC, the jump starter managed! Although the device consumed 50% of its energy, it proved that even an extremely discharged Diesel is not an obstacle.
Jump starter is a good investment
It turns out that a jump starter is an excellent investment and a gadget that can come in handy for any driver. In our test, the BPower GBC700 PRO coped with a big old diesel. The manufacturer assures that in favorable conditions the device can perform up to 30 engine starts on a single charge. Thanks to the jump starter, you no longer have to worry about the battery refusing to obey, and you can cope in any conditions. It is also an ideal gift idea for a car fan or any driver who commutes to work every day, even in winter. The undoubted advantage of the device is its small size – you can always carry this gadget with you.
